TOP 5 DEFENDERS OF AFF SUZUKI CUP 2012

#5

Name: Mohd Aidil Zafuan Abdul Razak
Country: Malaysia
Ratings: 3.00 / 5

He might be small in stature, but do not be deceived by his size as he makes up for it through his pace and constant running down the flanks. The Malaysia defender loves to take on his marker and find space to deliver dangerous crosses into the box.

He played decently in their defeat against Singapore in their opening match but was let down by his teammates, and also led the defence by example in their last group match against Indonesia as he held the fort well with his tidy display.

#4

Name: Wahyu Wijiastanto
Country: Indonesia
Ratings: 3.25 /5

Despite having a bad outing against Laos in their opening game, Wahyu regained his composure and focus in their next match against Singapore. He was very disciplined at the back and lead the defensive line to hold on to victory against the Lions.

#3

Name: Shaiful Esah
Country: Singapore
Ratings: 3.25 /5

One of Singapore's most talented left footer in recent history, the left-back has been consistent in all the matches he played and was also the provider for captain Shahril Ishak's opener against arch-rival Malaysia.

Despite not being fully fit for the last group match against Laos, Shaiful came on midway through the first half as Singapore trailed by two goals and played an intergral role in helping his side to a 4-3 comeback victory.

#2

Name: Safuwan Baharudin
Country: Singapore
Ratins: 3.30 / 5

The centre-back has formed a formidable partnership at the back with Baihaki Khaizan for Singapore, with the duo crucial at keeping their opponents at bay. Safuwan is also a perfect man-marker, shadowing his opponents at evey step, as evident especially in the game against Malaysia and Philippines. Strong, fearless and quick despite his tender 21 years, Safuwan has all the attributes necessary to become a top defender.

#1

Name: Mahali Jasuli
Country: Malaysia
Ratings: 3.30 / 5

A substitute in their first game against Singapore, Mahali came into the game and added life with an effervescent display. He creates trouble with his endless overlapping runs, and scored a well deserved goal reminiscent of Brazillian legend Cafu against Indonesia. His numerous assists also helped propel Malaysia further than anyone thought possible after a disastrous start.
